Onam is a traditional harvest festival celebrated widely in South India, especially Kerala. Iti falls in the Malayalam calendar month of Chingam, which in Gregorian calendar overlaps with August-September. The festival is also celebrated by some Christians. People buy and wear new clothes for the occasion of Onam, and this tradition is called the Onakkodi. On the day of Onam, Keralite Hindus install an image of Thrikkakara Appan or Onatthappan in their home.
